Bride of Frankenstein
Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt ) from "The Man Who Laughs", 1928
A film based on the novel by Victor Hugo.
Gwynplaine's lanky physique and grotesque grin was the visual inspiration for the Joker, Batman's archenemy.
The "Wicked Witch of the West" (played by Margaret Hamilton) from the 1939 film version of "The Wizard of Oz" has become a standard for what witches look like and an archetype for human wickedness. Here she is represented as a stooped, green-skinned witch dressed in a long black dress with a black pointed hat. Studio executives cut some of Margaret's most wicked scenes, worrying they would frighten children.
Photo taken at MGM Studios Culver City, California, USA on 1939
Vincent Price in The Tomb of Ligeia, c.1964
Boris Karloff in The Mummy, 1932

Vintage photo of members of The Holy and Undivided Trinity of Castle Rising, Norfolk, England having tea. It is often mistaken for a black witch tea party, Pre-1940s
